Make Your Own Suppository

What is a Suppository?

A suppository is a small plug of medication, herbs, and essential oils  that is designed specifically to melt at body temperature when inserted within a body orifice, in this case, the rectum, releasing the active substance.

An alternate name that it is sometimes called is pessary.  The idea behind a inserting this small plug is to release the medicinal herbs into the many blood vessels that follow the larger intestine.

Making your own suppositories is not only economical, but it is convenient and easy, and you are in control of what ingrdients you use.

Supplies you need include:

  •  Aluminum foil for making a mold, or a purchased mold (I have a perfect ice cube tray that makes little thin ice cubes for putting in a water bottle)
  • Glass measuring cup
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa Butter
  • 1/4 cup Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon of oil infused with Calendula flowers  (learn how to make herbal infused oil here)
  • Desired finely powdered herbs
  • Essential oil or herbal tincture

(You can grind your own herbs into a powder in a nut or coffee grinder, or use a mortar and pestle or purchase them at your local herb store.)

Before beginning this procedure be sure that you have a suppository mold.  You can sometimes purchase one from an apothecary supply shop, or you can easily make your own.

You will need aluminum foil, folded several times lengthwise, and then widthwise, to form a “trough” approximately 8 inches long and ½ inch wide.

  1. Place the cocoa butter and coconut oil in the glass measuring cup, along with the calendula infused oil, and microwave for 45-60 seconds - just until they are melted.
  2. Next, stir in the desired finely powdered herbs, as well as 15 drops of essential or several EOs blended, or 1 Tablespoon of an herbal tincture.
  3. Now, carefully pour the mixture into your mold, place in the refrigerator and allow to harden. When hard, cut into pieces the length of the patient’s pinky finger. I just cut the ones I make in the ice cube tray in half.

Note:  (Learn which herbs and essential oils are helpful with hemorrhoids by visiting our other pages on hemorrhoids - Natural Hemorrhoid Treatment  - Varicose Vein and Hemorrhoids Herbal Treatment - Treatment of Hemorrhoids - Treating Varicose Veins)

To use:  Insert when needed.  It would be wise to wear a sanitary napkin or a mini pad in case there is leakage when it melts. It will melt quickly because the coconut oil and cocoa butter melt at body temperature.

To store:  The suppositories will keep in the refrigerator or freezer for many weeks wrapped individually in foil.  Place these in a zip lock bag and label with the date made and the ingredients included in the suppositories.  The cold feels great, too!!

A different type of suppository can also be made by using finely powered herbs, again, using coconut oil as the base..

You will need:

  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 3 parts slipper elm powder
  • 2 parts other powdered herbs of preference such as comfrey, calendula, yarrow, plantain
  • 1/2 part of golden seal powder
  • A few drops of tea tree oil
  1. Now place the coconut oil in a glass measuring cup and heat it in the microwave 45 - 60 seconds, or do it over a double boiler if you prefer.
  2. Add enough herbs to make a thick paste that is the consistency of soft clay.
  3. Now add the tea tree oil and work it into the paste.
  4. Roll little suppositories that are the size and shape of your little finger.

To Use:  Insert as far as possible into the rectrum.  Again, you will probably want to wear some protection incase it is needed.

So there you have it!  Pretty easy and very effective.  This may become your favorite hemorrhoidal treatment!
